Northern Liberties
The Northern Liberties CDC was given the 2 shell like buildings on the corner of 2nd Street and Brown Street. The CDC board decided to encourage artists to stay in the neighborhood and through creative financing made the project viable. The project was a partnership between, private foundation monies, the Philadelphia housing authority and moderate income artists. Six one bedroom units were designed with the option of customizing the units to fit with the particular artists needs depending on the media used. The buildings were totally renovated, failing structure was repaired, new systems and roofs were upgraded and the facades were totally restored. This project was a great success, by acting as an anchor of stable property owners, which since has become the trendiest and most desirable up and coming area, jump starting the total urban renewal of the neighborhood.
